MBABANE – Soccer fans who wish to watch any of the 2010 World Cup games in South Africa have to start saving some money now or forget as the tickets will not be coming cheap.

National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu told this newspaper that even those tickets to be availed to the member associations would cost as much as US$300 (E2 700) for the Cup final.

The E2 900 is a special rate as the Cup final ticket in Germany 2006 cost US$600 (E5 400).

Mngomezulu said the tickets to be given to the association will not be complimentary tickets "but the FA has to buy them as well,"

He added: "People need to understand that the tickets are being sold either by FIFA or the Organising Committee in SA and they are categorised. If you are interested in them, the FA would have to buy them and then re-sell to that individual interested,"

Mngomezulu said for the preliminary games the tickets will cost a lot cheaper though.

Economy

"You might find that a ticket cost E200 or even less than that but then as the tournament continues to the knockout stages, the ticket prices also increase. With the unstable economy and the dollar rate still up, it means the ticket will be more expensive," he added.

This means for the local supporter, used to watching games for as less as E30, the World Cup tickets have been priced out of local market.

Irvin Khoza, the chairman of the 2010 World Cup Organising Committee, told members of the media this week that they will ensure the other 51 African countries on the continent benefit from the tournament.

"We have refereed the issue of making tickets available to our brothers and sisters in other African countries to the ticketing sub-committee," Khoza said.

Khoza disclosed that the tickets were limited but the Committee will try to make certain numbers available.

"Some of the options available include distributing them through the federations, CAF or their respective governments," the Orlando Pirates boss added.
