MBABANE – Sprinter Phumlile Ndzinisa will storm the track in the World Championships on Monday.

The global athletics event takes centre stage in Moscow, Russia. According to a schedule from the official event’s website, 200 metres athletes will start competing on Monday.  The championships start today until next Sunday.

The lanky athlete led by Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) President Themba Makhanya is the country’s only representative in the championships following Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa’s failure to make the cut.  Ndzinisa had declared her readiness to hoist the country’s flag high when she left on Monday.

She told this publication that winning a medal would be bonus as she wanted to improve her record of 23:67 seconds.
“I want to improve my personal best to at least 23:30 seconds,” she had said. Phumlile had undergone vigorous training in Mauritius, where she is based before the trip to Moscow. She was said to have arrived safely at the host country. Ndzinisa last represented the country in the London Olympic Games last year.

Meanwhile Matsenjwa’s 20:67 seconds national record in 200 metres was not enough to earn him a place in the celebrated event. He needed to clock at least 20:45 seconds.
