MBABANE – MTN Premier League champions Mbabane Swallows could be involved in the first-ever COSAFA club championships.

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) plans to stage the tournament pitting member champions later this year if it manages to tie up deals with various sponsors.

The regional body’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sue Destombes recently told one of South Africa’s leading newspapers, Sowetan, that the council was close to reaching a deal with undisclosed sponsors of the tournament
“Should things fall into place; the tournament could be hosted in South Africa as early as 2013. This, if it sails through, will enhance the competitiveness of the teams when they participate in the CAF Champions League,” reads the statement in part.
The idea is said to have been on the cards for almost a decade.

If the tournament finally sees the light of day, the red and white glamour giants will get an opportunity to rub shoulders with Southern Africa’s best that include South Africa’s Absa Premiership defending champions Kaizer Chiefs.
Other COSAFA tournaments in the pipeline are an Under-20 Youth Championships that the Lesotho Government and football association have agreed to host in December.

Namibia, on the other hand, has also tentatively agreed to host the COSAFA Women’s Championship in October as a dry-run for its hosting of the 2014 African Women’s Championship.
Attempts to get comments from National Football Association of Swazi-land (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu were fruitless at the time of compiling this report.
