LOBAMBA – Royal Leopard’s long-time captain and midfielder Mxolisi ‘Stopper’ Mthethwa had promised the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup trophy to His Majesty.

The jubilant Mthethwa, who is a special player in the police ensemble, said in post-match comments that he had said, to the King last Friday, they would add this trophy to their collection. They beat army side Young Buffaloes 4-1 after a penalty shootout in the final.

“When I displayed our trophies to the King on Friday I said to him that we were missing a trophy and it was this one. Now we’ve won it and I’m so happy I’ve kept my promise to His Majesty,” he said.
He also thanked the National Police Commissioner Isaac Magagula, the executive of the club, management, technical staff, players, supporters and all police officers for voting and believing in them.

His teammates dedicated the trophy to themselves, their commissioner, fans and families as they said without their support it would not have been possible.
“In the end charity was the winner while for us it is a bonus that we snatched the Cup which we worked so hard for. I’m also happy to have scored the winning goal that took us to the final,” said midfielder Bongani ‘Chicken’ Sibandze.

He praised his teammates for the title saying it was well deserved as they all worked towards the same goal. Meanwhile, former Manzini Sundowns’ Cameroonian striker Leonard Bongso marked his debut with a goal when he nodded the first goal in the semi final 2-1 win over Green Mamba.

He said the goal was something he wanted to prove to people that no matter how down you may be but you can always rise and shine. He was referring to his near-season long lay-off due to injury while at Sundowns.
