MBABANE – All is not well within the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) executive committee, which has been divided by the now contentious 16-team league proposal.

A heated debate ensued during the executive committee’s meeting on Wednesday night at Sigwaca House as tempers flared among the executive committee members during the discussion of the 16-team league proposal.

Actually, the meeting was convened for among other things, discussing the proposal by the Manzini Regional Football Association (MRFA), which called for the increment of teams to 16 in both the National First Division and MTN Premier Leagues. The PLS, as revealed by this newspaper yesterday, had disowned the proposed arbitration on the matter, which was initiated by the football mother body. Insiders at the FA revealed, yesterday, that so tense was the executive committee’s meeting on Wednesday such that there was a lot of finger-pointing, accusations and counter accusations.

“It was then resolved that a Special General Assembly be convened next week to put the matter to bed once and for all. The resolution of the Special General Assembly will be final and binding. The executive committee has the power according to the constitution to convene the Special General Assembly.

“In fact, the CEO was instructed to issue the notice to the membership.  Among the mandates of the executive committee it is to implement all resolutions of the General Assembly. Likewise, if the executive committee encounters problems in implementing such resolutions of the General Assembly, then they (executive) can convene the Special General Assembly,” the source said.

Our source also revealed that harsh words were exchanged during the meeting, as tempers flared. This was after it transpired that some members of the executive were now singing a different tune and were against the idea of the teams being increased.

“One of the members even walked out leaving the meeting in progress. What seemed to irritate the members was that some had already voiced their displeasure in the proposal urging the president to ensure that it is withdrawn.

“However, it was then felt that the Special General Assembly be convened so that a decision could be taken on the issue once and for all,” he said. The NFAS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Frederick Mngo-mezulu on the other hand said he was not at liberty to discuss what transpired during the meeting.

“Obviously those were internal issues, which were discussed and I cannot reveal the contents of the meeting. I can, however, assure the football fraternity that hopefully by the end of next week, this matter will have been decided. For now, there is nothing one can say,” he said.
