EX-CHIPOLOPOLO STAR DENNIS LOTA DIES
MBABANE – Ex-Zambia’s Chipolopolo and Orlando Pirates striker Dennis ‘Chesa Mpama’ Lota has died after a short illness in South Africa.
Lota who is well known in the football world as he was inch perfect in front of goal for Zambia, South African soccer giants Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows died in South Africa in the early hours of Tuesday evening at a Johannesburg hospital.
He had been admitted to the unnamed hospital over the weekend after what looked like a minor illness, reports suggest.
He was 40 years of age when he met his death and worked as an assistant coach for Moroka Swallows, a team he also had a short stint with as a player.
Lota, who also was part of the Chipolopolo squad that played Sihlangu in the 2001 COSAFA tournament at the Somhlolo National Stadium, was last seen on the Moroka Swallows’ bench last Friday when his side lost 2-0 to PSL log leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
In the game against Sihlangu, he was a key man but failed to score in open play until he scored in the penalty shootout which the locals won.
He was also much renowned for his celebration whenever he scored.
In his celebration, he would rub his palms against each other which earned him the nickname ‘Chesa Mpama’. Other South African clubs he featured for include Mpumalanga Black Aces, FC AK, Amazulu and Dangerous Darkies.
