DOMINIC KUNENE IS ’DOWNS COACH
MBABANE – Former Young Buffaloes assistant coach, Dominic Kunene, will lead Manzini Sundowns as head coach until the end of the season.
Sundowns have parted ways with former coach Mpendulo Ngwenya and Kunene, who ironically was brought into the team at Ngwenya’s recommendation will take over.
Team PRO Muzi Matsenjwa in a statement, announced that the head coach position will be vacant at the end of the season and disclosed that Ngwenya and other coaches would be most welcome to apply.
“The coach (Ngwenya) was granted a leave of absence two weeks ago by management following some serious differences with the team. In the interest of progress, Dominic Kunene assumed the role of head coach on a caretaker basis.
“A task team was set up to review the technical set-up at Sundowns and to work on resolving the dissimilarities with Mpendulo. It is through their (task team) recommendation that Dominic Kunene will continue to lead the team on a caretaker basis until the end of the season and in the same breath relieve Mpendulo of his duties,” part of the statement reads.
Matsenjwa termed the decision regrettable. “Mpendulo came to Sundown’s as an assistant coach and was tasked to work with the then head coach Milton Dlamini. Both coaches were given the task to build a team that can challenge for honours and reasonable resources were put at their disposal to accomplish this mission.
Unfortunately, Milton could not obtain a licence to work in Swaziland as a head coach of a premier league side thus he was relieved of the head coach position. In consideration of the fact that the season was already underway and given the fact that ‘The Old Croco’ had been with the team, a team he assisted to build in pre-season, the only logical decision was to give him the head coach position on a caretaker basis.
“We thank Mpendulo for the wonderful job he accomplished at Sundowns and the tireless effort he put in transforming Sundowns into a formidable team,” read the statement.
He then thanked the team’s supporters for rallying behind the new coach in the team.
