MBABANE – Former Midas City striker Thando Shabangu has helped UNISWA beat visiting Lesotho 1-0 in the Intervarsity Games opener last night.

UNISWA is the acronym for the University of Swaziland. The country’s soccer side had a dream start in the one-week event following the celebrated win over the mountainous kingdom at a rain-soaked Mavuso Sports Centre.
Confirming the result, UNISWA Mbabane Campus Director Siboniso Dlamini commended the team for the fighting spirit but highlighted that the win never came on a silver platter.

“It was a tightly contested clash but we’re relieved as Thando’s strike early in the second half separated the two sides,” he said.
The country paraded a strong looking side comprising of Manzini Wanderers stylish midfielder, Sandile ‘Theo’ Motsa.
The outfit need to beat Botswana in the final game tomorrow at Mavuso Sports Centre to win the elusive gold medal. Kick-off is set for 5pm. Lesotho will get a chance to make amends against fellow visitors, Botswana this afternoon.

No immediate comment could be sourced from one of the local charges’ coaches, Lindani Makhanya, as his phone repeatedly rang unanswered after the match.
The game was set to kick-off at 4pm but was delayed for about two hours as the UNISWA’s white socks clashed with that of their opponents.  The issue was eventually resolved as Team Swaziland eventually changed to yellow socks but the supporters had started to lose their patience.
