SEA BIRDS UNVEIL MPENDULO NGWENYA AS NEW COACH
MBABANE – Former Manzini Sundowns mentor Mpendulo Ngwenya is the new coach at struggling Premier League side, Sea Birds.
Contrary to a report from one of the local publications which reported that Jerry ‘Mbazo’ Gamedze beat Ngwenya to the post, the latter was unveiled by the directors to the players at Zakhele Sports Ground in Manzini yesterday. An excited Sea Birds’ Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Board of Governors representative, Sicelo Mkhonta, confirmed the latest developments yesterday, saying they were hoping to keep the youthful coach for a long period.
“At Sea Birds, we don’t hire coaches but we groom them to be part of the management structure. We’re happy to have a coach of Ngwenya’s calibre and the players have welcomed him with warm hands,” he said.
Ngwenya said he was up to the task at hand, thanking Sea Birds for showing serious interest. “A lot of teams were after my services but I chose Sea Birds because of their structure. I don’t like to keep on changing teams, so such a set-up is perfect,” he said.
“I’m fully aware that Sea Birds are not doing well at the moment but we’ll work as a team to change the situation. They have a mixture of young and experienced players, so I’m sure we’ll make things work as I’m also passionate about development.”
The coach shot to fame while assistant coach at giants, Mbabane Swallows, about two seasons ago. He also had a short stint with National First Division side, Red Lions. He recently led the national Under-20 side. He will be assisted by Siyabonga Bhembe who was recently roped in. Sea Birds are on the 10th spot on the MTN Premier League standings with only16 points in 17 games.
