slapped
Information gathered revealed that a senior Pirates player (name withheld) slapped an unnamed Highlanders fan with an open hand.
However the pair reportedly managed to smoke a peace pipe but it was already too late as the two sets of supporters were already fighting; resulting in the stabbing of one Highlanders supporter while one had his replica shirt torn. Police rushed to the scene to help calm the situation.
Highlanders Assistant Head of Security Sikelela Mhlanga also attended to the issue and reported it to on-duty police officers.
“We’re saddened by the unnecessary attack but luckily the stabbed fan escaped with minor injuries,” he said.
The route to the main gate was blocked by some Pirates supporters which forced the opposition to use an alternative exit.
Police Deputy PRO Inspector Khulani Mamba confirmed that police officers attended to the issue but no case was opened.
“After the supporter was assaulted by the player he was asked if he would open a case but he responded to the negative,” he said.
The implicated player denied the allegations as he claimed the opponents’ fans attacked one of his teammates.
