MBABANE – The Junior Tennis National Championships yesterday got underway at the University of Swaziland (UNISWA) where the competing youngsters showed great talent.
One female player Ziyanda Dlamini was disappointed not to have an opponent as her age rivals did not pitch, but was still named national champion in the Under-14 Girls category.

Otherwise, several games were played in a round-robin format.
These consisted girls and boys, under 12 and 14 age categories. Some of the games were so interesting as they revealed some talent that made one realise the future looks bright if the youngsters are nurtured well as they currently are under the eye of national development coach Bongani Kunene who is also Junior Tennis Initiative (JTA) overseer.

“I’m raising stars here and with time the results of this development will surpass football internationally. I don’t want to praise them for nothing but it is good that the media is witness to this. It is all hard work under not so conducive conditions,” Kunene said.

He said the standard displayed by some of the youngsters was amazing such that he felt encouraged to work even harder to raise future stars. Some of the shining players yesterday include Siyanda Dlamini, Mukelwa Maziya, Thuthukani Maziya and Natasha Wales among others.

On the left are some of the results of the games that had played early on the day. Full results will be released shortly.
