MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders’ marshals who lit fire at Somhlolo National Stadium during the half time of their game against Young Buffaloes face the axe from the Mbabane giants.

The marshals were photographed by photojournalists from this newspaper starting a fire in front of the team’s grandstand during half time of the SwaziBank Cup semi-final match against the army side. They lost the match 6-3 in penalties after it ended 2-all in regulation and extra time. Highlanders Chairman Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane said as a team they frowned upon such behaviour. He said they were still doing some investigations on the matter and assured that heads would roll once they were done with the investigations.

“The team has its structures. We cannot allow people to do as they please by bringing the name of the club into disrepute. We do not want bad behaviour from any members of the club and we are not expecting it to come from marshals, people whom we have tasked with responsibilities,” he said.
Simelane said he was still shocked after seeing the picture that was  published by this newspaper yesterday with the marshals lighting the fire in front of their supporters.

“These are the things that take our football donkey’s years. We are expecting everyone within the team’s structures including fans, supporters, marshals, MC members, patrons and players to behave well,” he said.

Simelane said such behaviour ends up landing the team in trouble with the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS), as they may face charges for their action.  “Highlanders have been playing well especially in the National First Division without any fires.

This will end up spoiling the team’s name. What is worse is that the stadium property could also be damaged by such acts. We just want to stop it from the start and we will not let this go away. If they are found to have been doing something wrong, they will not be suspended but shown the exit door,” he said.

The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs through the ministry’s Sports Officer, Foreman Dlamini warned teams against destroying Somhlolo’s artificial turf while using muti. The artificial turf was dug and burnt in some places.
