MBABANE – In what will come as a huge relief to the sporting fraternity, government has released the all along frozen sports grant.

National Sports Council of Swaziland (SNSC) Chairman Menzi Dlamini invited sports associations to approach the office of the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Darius Dlomo to receive their funding, as the money, just over E2.6 million of the E3.5 million, has already been deposited into the Sports Council’s account.

Government, according to Dlamini, had suffered a change of heart and will inject the amount in two phases. He was speaking during a press briefing at the Sports Council Offices yesterday morning in the presence of the Director of Sports Sipho Magagula and the acting Sports Council CEO, Dlomo.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to urge the stakeholders to come forward and join us in thanking the government for their prudence in ensuring that sports do not suffer in the end. In fact the government had already indicated that despite the current impasse, it could not allow sports to suffer.
“The money was part of the sports budget anyway. The government had obviously seen there was a lot wrong in sports, hence it took the decision to withhold some of the money. The grants come quarterly as it is the norm,” Dlamini said.

He said both parties were adhering to the recent court ruling. “Neither party has indicated that they will appeal the last ruling. We are happy that this means sports will benefit especially those at the grassroots, which is development,” Dlamini said.

The Director of Sports, Magagula, shared the same sentiments noting that it was always going to be difficult for the government to keep on funding the sporting fraternity with no government principal officers in the board.
He also noted that the government spent a lot of money in the court proceedings as well.
