MBABANE – Chess players and schools must prepare themselves for a busy year in the sport.

According to the Swaziland National Chess Association (SNCA) Chairman, Layidaphansi Dlamini, there are a lot of local and international tournaments are to be staged during the year.
SNCA hosted a schools tournament yesterday at St Michaels Primary where over 15 pupils showed up to display their skills.

Dlamini said even though the turnout was not as good as expected, they were happy that the pupils who came were from different schools around the country.

“The sport is growing and more people have shown their love for it. There are a lot of tournaments that will be staged in the country before we test ourselves in the international stage. We invite people to come and play during this tournament to stand a chance of being selected into the national teams,” he said.

Some of the schools that were represented during the tournament yesterday included St Marks High, Hillside High, Boyane Primary, Saim High, St Michaels Primary and Ngwane Park High School.
“Schools like Mhlatane reported that they were not going to make it and we are thankful that they did make the effort of attending the tournament. Our focus is on development and we are happy we have young pupils from the age of nine years and we hope more are still going to join,” he said.
