MANZINI – Elangeni High School has proved to be a dominant force in futsal. This is after their boys’ and girls’ teams clinched titles on both sections during the National Championships played yesterday at Bosco Skills Centre, Manzini. Worth mentioning is that they defended the titles which they won last year.
Futsal is a sport more akeen to soccer but the games are played in a basketball-court sized pitch with a small ball and a team represented by four infield players and a goalkeeper. Coming back to the games yesterday, the stylish Elangeni boys’ team hammer Etjendlovu 4-0 in the final after they had narrowly beaten an impressive Zombodze 2-1 in the semi-finals. However, the score cannot be viewed as a true reflection of the fast flowing final as the two teams went at each other but great defending worked for Elangeni, coupled with fantastic goalkeeping.
Elangeni coach Bonginkhosi Mhlanga was indeed on cloud nine after leading his charges to a second title in the second consecutive year, but conceded that it was not an easy task to complete.
“The competition was very tough this year but we managed to win it again. I’m very happy that we were able to defend our title. I’m also positive that with good preparations we will once again win the championship next year,” he said. Meanwhile, coming third was Ngwane Park High School who beat Zombodze 2-1 in the Losers final. Ngwane Park had been knocked out of title contention by Etjendlovu who defeated them 1-0.
The goodness of the sport is the inclusion of people living with disabilities as the School for the Deaf was also taking part and they were knocked out by Ngwane Park in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile the winners were presented with medals and trophies.
