The dusty plains of Malindza provided the foundation for a young man, whose name has become synonymous with the rhythmic heartbeat of Eswatini traditional dance. Born and raised in a community where respect is a lived reality rather than a spoken concept, Nhlanganiso Tsabedze, widely known as Mabhodweni, emerged from a household rooted in humility and discipline. The early lessons of greeting elders properly and listening with intent provided the grounding that defines his identity today.
“Malindza gave me identity and my family gave me grounding,” he states.
Currently, Mabhodweni is a prominent figure in the local cultural landscape, particularly within the realm of kutsamba. His daily life is a blend of traditional ceremony and modern ambition. “I assist different teams during traditional ceremonies and community events, be it umtsimba, sitsinjana, schools culture day and other events,” says Tsabedze. For him, culture is not a seasonal hobby, but a permanent lifestyle. He is focused on growing as a young man who intends to leave a positive footprint in every space he occupies.
Discipline and consistency serve as the pillars of Mabhodweni’s character. He maintains that when he enters a cultural space, he does not merely attend; he represents. “I believe in doing things properly and respecting tradition, the energy people see comes from preparation, pride and understanding the deeper meaning behind what we do.”
His journey into the cultural practice of kutsamba began at the age of eight. Inspired by his aunt, he watched her dedication and confidence with admiration before eventually transitioning from an observer to a participant. This path was not merely about movement, but about the unity and pride inherent in the art form. Over time, kutsamba became the vehicle through which he developed his personal confidence and carriage. “It became more than just an activity: It became part of who I am.”
To Tsabedze, culture represents identity and belonging. He views it as the thread that connects the present generation to their ancestors and reminds them who they are. This deep-seated love for heritage ensures his presence at nearly every major cultural gathering. “Culture keeps us grounded. When there is a cultural event, you will most likely find Mabhodweni there, because that is where my heart feels at home.”
Mabhodweni is frequently seen alongside local Afro-Pop sensation Sancheziey. They have recorded the ‘Siyabonga Gogo’ remix which features legendary artist Lodanda, Limkokwing University Choir and Mabhodweni, who plays Luveve in the song. They have performed at schools culture days and cultural events. Recently, they performed before Their Majesties during the Official Opening of the 3rd Session of the 12th Parliament.
