MBABANE – Some Premier League and National First Division teams have voiced their frustrations regarding the high costs associated with booking Somhlolo National Stadium.
Sources within the top flight clubs suggest the current fee structure is unsustainable, placing further financial strain on teams already struggling with rising operational costs.
Club public relations officers (PROs) were reacting to the announcement made by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs regarding the availability of the national arena for public use.
In a press statement released by the Office of Minister Bongani Nzima, the ministry announced that Somhlolo National Stadium is now officially available for bookings for sporting and other relevant events.
“Following the successful rehabilitation of the facility, the approved user fee for the utilisation of the stadium is E10 000 per game,” the statement confirmed.
The ministry further clarified that the fee, which was approved by the Ministry of Finance, is intended to support the sustainable maintenance, management and long-term preservation of the national asset.
Reacting to the news, a spokesperson for one of the capital city giants thanked government for finally making the stadium available but was quick to highlight that the booking fee is too steep for local clubs.
“They should review the booking fees. It is an open secret that teams are struggling financially,” the PRO said.
A representative from another Mbabane-based club shared these sentiments. While he noted that his team are eager to host home matches at the venue due to its proximity to the capital, he maintained that the current fee is simply too high. However, not all officials are in agreement; one club representative stated that they had not yet discussed the matter as they currently have no fixtures scheduled for the venue.
