MANZINI – A Standard Five pupil at Ngwane Park Primary school has been chastised for taking in a 17-year-old girl who had run away from home and making him his ‘wife.’

The young couple was found in a house in Manzini a week ago.
The 15-year-old pupil, who is an orphan is the youngest in a child-headed family.
He would lock the girl in the family house when he went to school.
She cooked and washed for the family while her distraught parents back home were worried about her whereabouts.

When she left home the girl left a suicide note detailing how she was fed up with life and disappeared.
The search began immediately after her parents saw the note. It continued through the Easter holidays until the couple was found.
In an interview, the young boy said he was in love.
He revealed that he and the girl had been going out for a while now.
The smitten Sizwe* told this newspaper that they even made love on several occasions.
He said they did not use a condom on any of the occasions.

He had no fear of making her pregnant because, he said, he was ready to take care of a family.
He said he was introduced to the adult world by his girlfriend whom he said taught him how to do adult stuff.
The pupil said the past Easter holidays were a turning point for him because he got the opportunity to stay with his lover for a longer period.

“We enjoyed wonderful moments until the police, together with *Nomsa’s father arrived,” he said.
The police took them to the station where they were reprimanded.
“The police had no major problem with our relationship. They only encouraged us to respect Nomsa’s parents. They never said we should stop the relationship,” he explained.

He said he was happy with this outcome because he was now free to go out with his girlfriend.
However, he said he was still bitter with Nomsa’s father for his methods when handling her issues. He said taking the girl in was a hard decision.

Sizwe claims he was forced to take care of his girlfriend after her father beat her.
“She came to me crying and she had scars all over her body after being beaten by her father with a sjambok.”
He said this angered him. “I do not understand why he beats her because she is an adult now,” he said.
Incidentally, Nomsa is also a Standard Five dropout and her family resides at kaShali, an area within the vicinity of Ngwane Park. She dropped out last year but her father enrolled her in one of the colleges in Manzini where she did computer lessons.

The Times SUNDAY visited the boy’s school and found him busy crooning in the school choir. He had no problem sharing information about his love life.

He said his affair did not interfere with his studies because he was able to draw the line between the two. The boy said he actively participated in all school activities and was preparing for the final exams.
He expects to get at least a First Class pass at the end of the year. He participates in other school activities and is not rebellious. He has managed to keep his affair from the school.
