My criminal face got me arrested - suspect
SIMUNYE - “I think the police arrested me because of my criminal face”.
These were words of housebreaking and theft suspect, Sikhumbuzo Mamba, when attempting to prove his innocence on his criminal charges.
This was during his court appearance on Tuesday morning together with another accused, Mfanimpela Mavimbela, who were both arrested and charged with robbery and housebreaking.
Mamba alleged in court that he was arrested in connection with the housebreaking and robbery crimes because police officers handling his case always believed that he was a criminal at face value.
“I even overheard one of them stating that I was a criminal and that is why he linked me with the crimes,” he told the court. Mamba’s statement did not go down well with Magistrate Phili-siwe Dlamini, as she quizzed the accused as to why he believed that was the reason for his arrest and why he first denied knowledge of the alleged crimes but later contradicting himself in his submissions.
“You are currently facing serious offences, where in the robbery charge you face a custodial sentence, especially now that it has been proved that you were involved in the offence,” the Magistrate said.
Both of the accused were found guilty by the court and are expected to appear on Tuesday for sentencing.
