New legislation to tighten screws drafted
MANZINI - Government is in the process of putting an end to the abuse of medication through new legislation.
Dr Vusi Magagula, the Ministry of Health’s Deputy Director of Medical Services, said current legislation regulating pharmaceuticals was to blame, mentioning that this law was too old and irrelevant to the country’s present challenges.
He said the law, which was enacted in 1924, cannot effectively police the industry today.
He disclosed that the pieces of the new legislation had been put together and a draft bill had already been submitted to cabinet for approval, adding that all that was left was for Parliament to debate it and make it a law. “The new law will address all such concerns once and for all,” he promised.
He said the new legislation would establish councils to regulate every sphere of the medical pharmaceutical industry and medical services in general, so that the country was rid of all impostors who pose a danger to the health of its inhabitants.
