33 athletes selected for national champs
MBABANE A total of 33 athletes were selected on Saturday to compete in the athletics national championships.
The selection was conducted at Simunye, where athletes from all over the country pitched to try their luck.
The selection was for 100m, 200 and 400 metres races. Athletics Association of Swaziland Secretary Thulani Magongo said the selection was a success as they managed to get athletes in all the races. He said they had initially planned to select six athletes in each category for both the women and men’s section. He said in some categories, they could not fill up all the six positions because there were not enough athletes.
The 33 athletes will be competing in the national championships scheduled for June 27.
“Everything went well, it’s only that in the other races we did not get the six athletes as planned because they did not pitch for the selections,” he said.
In the 400m race they managed to get only three athletes instead of six as there were not enough females who competed in this race. Magongo said they could fill up the vacant positions if they can get the three women.
Among the selected in the 400 metres women is Temalangeni Dlamini, who is fresh from Botswana having competed in the Southern Region Senior Athletics championships.
Mphelave Dlamini has been selected to compete in both the 100 and 200 metres. Other athletes who have been selected include Sibusiso Matsenjwa, Thabani Mdluli, Dladla, Mathumile Neliwsa Zwane, Floyd Dlamini and many others. During the championships, there will be eight athletes competing in each race as Mozambicans are also expected to grace the events after an invitation by AAS.The championships are in preparation for the world championships to be held in Berlin in August.
