MBABANE – All eyes will be firmly fixed on the Central Bank of Eswatini this week as Governor Dr Phil Mnisi prepares to deliver the 2026 Annual Monetary Policy Statement.
This is a key event that is expected to set the tone for the country’s economic direction in the months ahead.
Scheduled for Thursday morning at the CBE Complex in Ezulwini, the address comes at a time when both global and domestic economic conditions remain uncertain, shaped by shifting geopolitical dynamics, inflationary pressures and evolving financial market conditions.
The governor’s annual address is one of the most closely watched events on the country’s economic calendar, offering critical insights into how the central bank has navigated monetary policy over the past year and, more importantly, how it intends to respond to emerging risks and opportunities.
This year’s statement will be delivered under the theme ‘Monetary Policy in a Time of Uncertainty and Heightened Geopolitical Tensions’, a reflection of the complex global environment that continues to influence small, open economies such as Eswatini.
Across the world, central banks are grappling with the lingering effects of inflation, volatile commodity prices and tightening financial conditions. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in key trading regions, have added further pressure to supply chains and global growth prospects.
For Eswatini, these external developments have direct implications. As a country closely linked to regional and international markets, shifts in global economic conditions often translate into changes in inflation, exchange rates and overall economic stability.
Consumers, on the other hand, will be paying attention to how the policy outlook could affect their daily lives, particularly in terms of loan repayments, savings returns, and the cost of living.
Given the current economic climate, analysts expect the governor to adopt a cautious tone, balancing optimism about economic recovery with realism about persistent risks.
