MBABANE – Minister for Agriculture Mandla Tshawuka says government has placed a monumental task before EWADE Chief Executive Officer Dr Samson Sithole to lead the country towards food sovereignty.

Speaking to the Times Business Desk, Tshawuka said the ministry’s expectations for Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) are immense following the renewal of Dr Sithole’s contract for another three years.

He noted that the parastatal’s track record in uplifting rural communities through agriculture has demonstrated its ability to deliver on major national objectives.

“EWADE is entrusted with many government projects and the expectation is huge. Our vision is to fight hunger and reach a stage where emaSwati are able to feed themselves, instead of relying on imports. That is the ultimate measure of food sovereignty,” the minister said.

Tshawuka praised the impact of EWADE under Dr Sithole’s leadership, citing tangible changes in the lives of rural farmers. “The work of this parastatal is felt and seen by many. It speaks volumes about the CEO’s leadership, which is rooted in strong work culture and ethical practices,” he said.

Among the critical initiatives on EWADE’s table is the Mkhondvo Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Programme (MNWAP), which Tshawuka described as a game-changer for the Shiselweni Region.

“The MNWAP will transform livelihoods by ensuring water access for irrigation and opening up new agricultural opportunities. This project is central to our national food security goals,” the minister stated.

EWADE is also tasked with implementing the E851 million Smallholder Agricultural Productivity and Market Enhancement Programme (SAPEMP) as well as a World Bank–funded youth empowerment project.

Tshawuka said these initiatives collectively form the backbone of the country’s push towards food sovereignty and rural economic transformation.
