The foundation of any great symphony is a solid base and for Siphiwokuhle Nxumalo, life is a composition built on the sturdy pillars of education and faith.
Born the last of two siblings, she was raised in a household where spiritual guidance and academic rigour were paramount. Her mother, a retired Principal, and her late father, Pastor DM Simelane, founder of Foundation of Life International Ministries, provided the nurturing environment that shaped her character.
Her educational path was inextricably linked to her musical talent. After attending Sydney Williams School and St Michael’s High, she completed her SGCSE at Elangeni High School. This transition was facilitated by a bursary she received based on her exceptional participation and achievement in Choral music. This early recognition of her gift served as a precursor to a career defined by discipline and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Currently, Nxumalo serves as a primary school teacher at Sydney Williams Primary School. In this role, she is dedicated to nurturing young minds and inspiring confidence in the next generation. However, her influence extends far beyond the traditional classroom. She is a woman defined by her values, particularly faith, resilience and a commitment to continuous learning.
“My faith gives me a sense of purpose and direction while resilience enables me to persevere through difficulties,” she notes. These principles guide her actions, as she strives to make a positive impact on those around her.
Her musical journey began in primary school, where a natural talent quickly transformed into a calling. By the time she reached Form II, she was already competing as a soloist in Classical music. This period was crucial for building the stage confidence that would later see her lead large ensembles to regional victory.
“In 2015, I embarked on my journey in Choral conducting at Fonteyn High School. This experience not only refined my musical abilities but also nurtured my leadership skills,” by guiding young musicians towards discovering their own talents. Under her direction, excellence became the standard. “Today, I am one of the best female conductors and soloist in the country.”
Her return to the Sydney Williams team in 2019 saw the group consistently secure top positions in the competitive Choral circuit. Currently, they stand as the defending champions in the Juniors category and first runners-up in the Girls’ Choir, “clear evidence that we have continued to ‘strike while the iron is hot’ and maintain our competitive edge”.
The entrepreneurial spirit took root in 2018 when she and her husband founded Pure Voices. Serving as Directors, they have watched the ensemble flourish since its debut at the Standard Bank Choral Music competitions. The year 2025 marked a significant milestone for Pure Voices. The ensemble secured multiple first-place positions and earned prestigious platinum marks. This success paved the way for international recognition as they represented Eswatini at a major Choral event in Sun City, South Africa, in December 2025. Competing against the strongest choirs in the SADC region, Pure Voices emerged victorious, bringing home first place and proving that meticulous preparation yields results.
