MBABANE - The fifth edition of the Makoti Festival, held on May 2 at the Malkerns Country Club, saw a mixed turnout of its advertised line-up.
While the event drew a significant crowd to celebrate cultural heritage, several high-profile South African artists failed to appear for their scheduled performances.
Despite being featured prominently in the festival’s promotional posters, DJ Zinhle, Feza, Mdu Aka TRP and Phindy The Real Queen, who was slated to be the MC of the event, did not show up for the event. The absence of these headline acts left gaps in the programme, though organisers continued with the scheduled local and regional performances to maintain the event’s momentum.
In contrast to the missing international acts, the artists who did take to the stage were noted for their exceptional performances. The line-up of performers who delivered sets included Nothando Hlophe; the Gospel powerhouse delivered a spirited performance that resonated with the festival’s attendees. Velemseni, known for her soulful delivery, provided a high-energy set.
Young Zesh and Sancheziey both maintained high engagement with the crowd throughout their respective slots, delivering Swati music and a full showcase of culture was on display as Sancheziey performed with his team doning traditional attire.
The collective effort of these artists ensured that the musical component of the cultural festival remained active despite the logistical setbacks regarding the South African contingent.
A major highlight of the day was the official prize-giving of the special raffle draw powered by Orchard Insurance. Nontokozo Ntjingila was announced as the winner of the first prize, walking away with E50 000.
