MBABANE – With the deadline set for this coming weekend on Saturday, over 30 applications have been received for the Miss Culture pageant.

This was revealed by Nelly Shongwe, Director of the Miss Culture pageant, during an interview with this publication.

“We now have over 30 applications with us, most regions had sent eight applications each. We are calling for more applications, people must continue applying,” she said.

She also revealed that eliminations are set to start soon.

“Eliminations will be done in the regions as soon as the deadline hits. We are anticipating to start them next week where we will be going to the regions,” Shongwe said.

Miss Culture is a platform for young women in Eswatini who are passionate about culture and heritage. It is a place where they can embrace local culture and speak out freely.

The pageant has been running successfully for over a decade and it has become a significant cultural event in Eswatini.

The young girls who are voted as winners go on to be ambassadors of local culture and they are groomed and aligned with cultural activities. Several young girls have been crowned over the years as part of the reputable pageant.

These include Melinda Mavuso who won the crown before the current queen, Gcinizwi Tsikati.

Mavuso went on to participate in the Miss Culture Global pageant. Other young girls who were crowned include entrepreneur and model Nomphumelelo Mkholo, who was crowned as first princess alongside Melinda Mavuso and model Ncedo Mamba, who was crowned second princess.

Last year’s Miss Culture contract banned contestants from participating in modelling agencies after being crowned.
