MBABANE – The Central Transport Administration (CTA) reduced its expenditure by 94 per cent.

The latest Quarterly Economic Bulletin released by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development reflects that the expenditure of the CTA, which manages the government vehicle fleet, was reduced drastically following efficiency measures implemented by government.

The savings by CTA, a department under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, according to the Principal Secretary of the portfolio, Thulani Mkhaliphi, were brought about by the introduction of management systems.

Mkhaliphi said the systems which entail management, assess the fuel management trends and identify weaknesses, possible areas of fraud and/or loss of fuel.

It is worth noting that in 2023, the Chief Ndlaluhlaza-led Ministry of Public Works and Transport recruited a service provider to engage in the assessment of the adequacy of the procurement method and vendor list, to propose fuel cost savings and management systems, objectively verified fleet requirements and types of fleet requirements for each ministry and departments.

The service provider also installed a model for cost effective fleet deployment and management across all government ministries and departments.

The portfolio also conducted a physical inspection of each of the fuel depots and bowsers to assess their condition and functionality and in particular, assessed the robustness of the entire government fuel management system from supplier to consumption.

The service provider was tasked with identifying weaknesses and possible areas of fraud and losses while also being tasked with proposing a model for fleet workshop operation and fuel management.

They were also tasked with analysing the entire government fleet management staff including all workshop staff, CTA management and support staff as well as transport officers in ministries.
