MANZINI – The woman accused of defrauding holidaymakers by promising non-existent cruise ship trips has shocked the court by reversing her guilty plea.

Thandeka Mamba (33) appeared at the Manzini Magistrates Court yesterday for the start of her trial. She changed her plea to not guilty on the multiple counts of theft by false pretences, despite having admitted to the offences during a previous court appearance on December 17, 2025.

Mamba is alleged to have swindled several individuals out of substantial sums of money by offering to arrange cruise trips that were ultimately cancelled without refunds. The complainants had paid deposits and full amounts in good faith, only to discover there would be no such trip.

When the matter came to court, the charges were formally put to Mamba, and the court was informed of the change in plea. Principal Magistrate David Khumalo explained the legal implications and advised her of her rights. The matter has now been set for trial at a later date, giving the prosecution time to prepare its case and call witnesses.

Mamba remains out on bail totalling E87 130, previously granted in an earlier appearance. The bail conditions include E7 000 in cash and E80 130 in surety, secured through a motor vehicle placed as collateral. The court ordered that the vehicle must not be sold or disposed of until the case concludes and must be available for inspection to confirm its value.

Represented by lawyer Linda Dlamini, Mamba was supported in court by family members. She was warned to strictly comply with her bail conditions and to attend all court hearings. The trial is scheduled for July 23, 2027.
