MBABANE – The Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs has revealed that some local gamblers have pleaded for exclusion from gambling facilities around the country.

The Minister for Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Simelane has shared how the ministry was receiving requests from members of the public to be excluded from local gambling facilities because of their addiction.

The minister further shared that due to this, the ministry proceeded to provide gaming facilities with the identification of the individuals to exclude them from their facilities for enforcement.

This is one of many steps being taken by the ministry to curb what is emerging as a gambling problem for emaSwati throughout the country.

The minister shared this information in her responses to the ministry’s portfolio committee following the recent House of Senate debate.

She further shared that the ministry is doing its best to expedite the development of the Gaming Regulations, which will form the basis of enforcing compliance in accordance with the Gaming Act, 2022.

These regulations are being developed through a close alliance with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, as well as the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology, among others.

According to Minister Simelane, the contributions of these ministries are for the following considerations; financing to strengthen the Finance Ministry’s foothold on the revenue sharing derived from these gaming activities in order to reinforce domestic revenue collection that finances government spending.

Additionally, the regulations will provide for mechanisms for government to collect financial data and collate it in real time for revenue forecasting to support public investment and deepen domestic revenue collections.

In terms of business compliance, the Ministry of Commerce will provide inputs, expertise and oversight in ensuring that the framework complies with the overall frameworks for business regulations in Eswatini.

Technological compliance, the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology will provide guidance on the development of surveillance tools and regulate entities that handle personal information of gamers and digital restrictions of unauthorised persons including children. Also, the regulations will look into modalities for government to regulate, including online gaming which occurs beyond spatial spheres and as it is a virtual.
