MBABANE – It was a scene of utter horror born of a spurned lover’s rage.
Enraged by the finality of their severed romance, a jilted man descended upon his former girlfriend’s flat with lethal intent.
Armed with a bush knife, he launched a savage assault, hacking and stabbing the young woman who dared to end their relationship. Her friend, caught in the maelstrom of his fury, was not spared either. As the two women lay broken and bleeding on the floor, the attacker turned his violence inward, attempting to take his own life by hanging himself from the rafters with a rope. Fate, however, had a cruel twist in store as the rope gave way under his weight, tearing apart and sending him crashing to the floor, alive amid the devastation he had wrought. This terrifying ordeal unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Thursday morning at around 10:30am inside a rented house at Mpolonjeni. The tranquillity of the day was shattered when the 25-year-old suspect allegedly carried out this barbaric attack on his former girlfriend and her companion.
He now faces charges of attempted murder. Given the sensitive nature of the ongoing legal proceedings, the identities of those involved remain shrouded in secrecy, a necessary veil to protect the victims and uphold the integrity of the court’s process.
Speaking from her hospital bed, where she is piecing together both her physical and emotional wounds, the victim recounted the terror. She believes the attack stemmed from his inability to reconcile himself to the reality that their relationship was over earlier this year. “He simply could not stomach the fact that I had moved on,” she confided. “He was consumed by unhappiness whenever he saw or heard that my new boyfriend had visited me or when he dropped me off from work.” The morning had begun with a deceptively mundane calm. Inside her rented two-room house, she sat with her friend, who had come to braid her hair.
When a knock echoed at the door, she thought nothing of it as she was accustomed to receiving hair clients at home, presuming, therefore, that it was a customer arriving for an appointment. Without a hint of suspicion, she opened the door, only to find her former boyfriend standing on the threshold. “I allowed him in because I thought maybe he wanted us to speak peacefully,” she explained, with her voice heavy with the memory of that fatal mistake.
Initially, his demeanour was disarmingly serene. Upon entering, he appeared composed, leading her to believe he had genuinely come for a civil conversation regarding their past. However, that illusion was swiftly shattered. Moments later, her eyes widened in horror as she watched him surreptitiously conceal a bush knife underneath the bed, the hidden instrument of his fury signalling the beginning of the nightmare. “I asked him why he had brought a bush knife if he was there for a conversation,” she said. The victim alleged that the suspect then locked the door and hid the key, immediately making her fear for her safety. She said the atmosphere inside the house quickly changed from what she believed would be a peaceful discussion into a frightening confrontation. According to her, he demanded her phone. Sensing danger, she contacted her friend’s boyfriend asking for help and later attempted to call her landlord in hopes that nearby residents would intervene before the situation escalated. Before help could arrive, the suspect allegedly became violent.
According to the victim, the suspect suddenly attacked her using the bush knife, striking her repeatedly on the head while she attempted to shield herself using her hands. “He kept hacking me several times,” she said. “I was using my hands to protect my head.” Her friend was also allegedly attacked while trying to survive the ordeal inside the small, rented house. The women reportedly attempted to escape into another room, but the suspect allegedly followed them and continued attacking his former girlfriend while her injured friend watched helplessly. During the assault, the victim sustained serious injuries to her hands and upper body while trying to defend herself from the repeated blows. At one point during the attack, she reportedly collapsed while trying to reach the door. “My friend thought I was dead. She kept trying to wake me up even though she was also injured,” she said. According to the victim, the attack unfolded very quickly and left both women overwhelmed and unable to fully defend themselves against the sudden violence. She said blood covered parts of the room as they screamed for help while trying to survive the assault inside the small house.
