HEREFORDS – A 33-year-old man died after he allegedly threw himself onto a sharp metal enclosure surrounding a grave in an apparent act of suicide.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of Herefords. The tragic incident is reported to have occurred on Tuesday.
According to information gathered, the deceased was discovered by his mother at about 1:40pm after she went looking for him. She reportedly found him inside a cemetery, where he had sustained fatal injuries after throwing himself onto the metal structure enclosing one of the graves.
Police were informed of the incident and attended the scene, where preliminary investigations were conducted before the body was removed. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are continuing.
The incident has left residents of Herefords struggling to understand what could have driven the man to end his life in such an unusual manner. Community members who spoke to the Times of Eswatini described the incident as one they had never witnessed before, saying the choice of location had left many searching for answers.
The latest incident comes at a time when suicide remains a growing concern in Eswatini, with authorities, health professionals and community leaders continuing to call for greater awareness of mental health challenges and improved support systems for people experiencing emotional distress.
The issue has become the subject of national discussions following a series of suicide cases reported across the country in recent years. Government, together with various stakeholders, has intensified efforts to understand the underlying causes and identify practical interventions to reduce the number of people taking their own lives.
