MANZINI - Mbabane Swallows finally broke into the MTN Premier League’s top four for the first time this calendar year.
The capital city giants capitalising on their rivals’ stumbles to secure a clinical 2-0 victory over a heartbroken Manzini Wanderers last night.
While Swallows celebrated a milestone fifth consecutive win, the atmosphere at Mavuso was bittersweet. Before a ball was even kicked, Wanderers’ fate had been sealed by Malanti Chiefs’ 2-1 triumph over Tabankulu Celtics. The result condemned the crowd-pullers to the drop, yet they entered the fray playing for little more than the badge and a sense of pride.
Swallows, sensing blood in the water after seeing Green Mamba and Rangers drop points in earlier draws, wasted no time. The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when a defensive lapse in concentration allowed Njongo Mazibuko to pounce, watching his effort roll into an empty net to give the visitors the ascendancy.
Wanderers refused to lie down, bolstered by loyalists, who sang throughout the contest despite the looming reality of relegation. They nearly found a leveller just before the interval, but Sibusiso Manana dragged a glorious chance wide from inside the box. Swallows, too, were unlucky not to double their lead earlier, as Nhlanhla Ngwenya’s audacious long-range effort rattled the woodwork.
The second period was a more cagey affair. Looking to put the game to bed, Swallows coach Caleb Ngwenya turned to veteran forward Phiwayinkhosi 'Slwabelwabe' Dlamini just after the hour mark. The move aimed to maintain the momentum that had seen the striker net in his previous two outings.
Wanderers had their moments on the counter, with Lwazi 'Shumi' Mamba firing a promising shot just wide of the post. Their best opportunity to spoil the party arrived in the 85th minute, when substitute Sizolethu Mndvoti found himself one-on-one with Sandanezwe Mathabela. However, his tame effort was easily cleared, a moment that epitomised a season of missed opportunities for the Manzini giants.
As the clock ticked toward full-time, Mazibuko turned hero once again. Peeling away from a tiring defence, he kept his composure to beat Fisokuhle Dlamini with a precise low finish, completing his brace and ensuring there would be no late drama.
The final whistle confirmed the starkly different trajectories of these two titans. For Swallows, it is a return to the league's upper echelons and proof to their recent consistency. For Manzini Wanderers, a 2-0 defeat, which matched the score of the reverse fixture, mathematically confirms their exit from the top flight with five games still to play.
