TAMBANKULU – Time is running out.
For Manzini Wanderers, the famous ‘Weslians’ of the hub, the end is near and the cold reality of the situation is clear. After a bruising afternoon at the hands of clinical newcomers Tabankulu Celtics, the verdict is as sharp as it is painful: two matches. 180 minutes! That is all that remains to decide whether this great club survives or falls into the silence of relegation.
This was more than a defeat; it was a total disaster. Having lost 4-1 in the first meeting, Wanderers arrived seeking revenge, only to be torn apart once more. Eighteen defeats in 24 matches tell the story of a season spent at the bottom, a non-stop wave of losses that has left them stuck at the base of the table with only eight points.
The maths is cruel. If the ‘Weslians’ fail in their next two games, the trapdoor will shut. Even if they somehow won all their final four games, they would only reach 20 points, a total that may well be too little, too late.
They face a mountain in the form of Mbabane Swallows, followed by a desperate battle with Sisonkhe, who are also fighting for their lives. After that, the fixture list is full of tough opponents: Royal Leopard, Ezulwini United, Green Mamba and Amawele. These are the teams that have troubled Wanderers all season; games where they have struggled and ultimately lost. Last season, they were saved by the courts, a legal move that kept them in the league. However, there is no legal help for a lack of goals. On the pitch, the verdict is final.
Under the guidance of Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe, who took over mid-season, the effort has been there, but the results remain tragic. One win in 24 games. It is the story of missed chances followed by quick punishment.
Not even the arrival of legends like Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko or Lwazi ‘Shumi’ Mamba has been enough to change the story.
