‘Y’ello’ carrot’ race takes shape

MBABANE – Just four weeks into the MTN Premier League season, the battle for the hefty E110 000 first-round prize is already reaching a fever pitch. It is driven dramatically by an impressive early surge from unexpected contenders.

The most significant shift came this past weekend as Mbabane Swallows dramatically seized top spot. The ‘Birds’ delivered what is widely regarded as a major blow to one of the traditional frontrunners, defeating their fierce rivals Royal Leopard 3-2 in a pulsating and rain-soaked ‘Y’ello Super Sunday’ clash.

Swallows’ strong start sees them flying high at the summit of the table. In stark contrast, last season’s first-round champions, Royal Leopard, are surprisingly languishing near the relegation zone. Leopard, who have consistently challenged for this incentive in previous seasons, will need to quickly pick themselves up. They do, however, have games in hand to facilitate a potential recovery.

Additionally, Mbabane Highlanders have also made a bold statement in their bid for the crucial ‘carrot’. They are resisting any temptation to exit the top four bracket, despite Manzini Wanderers applying the brakes to their impressive run.

With the first-round action set to wrap up towards the end of January 2025, the road ahead promises to be exciting. Reigning league champions, Nsingizini Hotspurs, are also very much in the thick of the race.
