MANZINI – Amawele have extended their stay in the Premier League by one more season after surviving a scare from Viva Stumbo’s XI with a narrow 2-1 win yesterday.
This was during a pulsating PLE Promotion/Relegation Playoff match staged under cool Mavuso Sports Centre skies before a sizable crowd of spectators. They finish the mini-league on top with six points and on superior goal difference. Madlenya are also officially back in the Premier League despite a 1-2 setback to Magwanyana in Big Bend.
The latter finished on six points but had an inferior goal difference, dropping back to the MulaSport National First Division.
Amawele were all fired up and in survival mode. Mhlengi ‘Jizzah’ Mngomezulu’s effort was saved by Bhekisisa Dlamini into 15 minutes.
This was before Stumbo’s Captain Mlondi Mkhonta missed a crucial chance. Amawele efforts paid off as Phephisani ‘Pepper’ Maphanga was knocked down inside the box. His counterpart Machawe Dlamini marched forward at the instruction of captain Njabulo Magongo, who had already placed a ball.
The latter calmly slotted home with 25 minutes played. The Malkerns-based outfit forward Leonardo Tucker was too slow to convert a shot which would have levelled matters five minutes later. Reversely, the wind caused a deflection in Lethukukhanya Dlamini’s ball at Bhekisisa’s edge of the box.
