MBABANE — A wave of profound disappointment swept across Eswatini last night as closest neighbours South Africa suffered a devastating 2-0 defeat against co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hopes were exceptionally high across the border, but Bafana Bafana’s tournament began in disciplinary disaster. The South Africans tragically finished the game with just nine men on the pitch, losing midfielder Sphephelo Sithole and second-half substitute Themba Zwane to costly red cards. The severe numerical disadvantage quickly proved insurmountable, allowing a clinical Mexican side to secure a comfortable two-goal victory.

Despite the biting winter chill, hundreds of passionate emaSwati braved the cold to gather in open-space fan parks across Eswatini's largest cities, Manzini and Mbabane. Configured by Sibebe Premium Beer, which is the official beer of the FIFA World Cup, the public viewings brought the tournament alive on massive outdoor screens.

The atmosphere at the sites fluctuated wildly. Local fans vociferously cheered every promising attacking build-up from Bafana Bafana, only to roar in collective agony as the two goals were conceded. Interestingly, regional football dynamics showed deep divisions; a select few local contrarians openly cheered for the Mexicans, adding a layer of lively tension inside an emotional Mbabane fan park that hosted well over 100 attendees.

For Eswatini, a nation deeply intertwined with South African sports culture, this opening-day upset leaves local supporters thoroughly heartbroken. With two critical veteran players now facing automatic suspensions, Bafana Bafana face a monumental uphill battle to salvage their group stage campaign. They face winless Czech Republic next Thursday. The latter fell 1-2 to South Korea in the other group clash.
