MBABANE — The biting winter air at the start line of the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon is legendary.

This year, however, athletes tackling the brutal 2026 Comrades Marathon will have a little extra protection against the elements. Organisers have officially unveiled the 2026 Runners Buff, a vital piece of race-day kit, which is sponsored by World Sports Betting. Designed to shield competitors from the early morning chill, the official accessory ensures that runners can focus entirely on the epic ‘Up Run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg covering over 85km. First run in 1921 to commemorate South African soldiers who fell in the First World War, the Comrades Marathon is the ultimate test of human endurance. It carries immense international prestige, drawing elite athletes and dedicated amateurs from across the globe who look to conquer its relentless, punishing hills.

Among those braving the elements this year is a formidable contingent from Eswatini. Over 60 emaSwati athletes have officially confirmed their participation in the gruelling race set for Sunday, June 14, 2026. Highlighting the deep community roots of the sport, this passionate group includes 10 local educators, who have balanced lesson planning with gruelling, high-mileage training regimes.

For these Eswatini competitors, the newly revealed neck gaiter is more than just merchandise; it is a vital shield against the freezing dawn conditions that await them at the start line. According to an official statement released by the Comrades Marathon organisers, the gear is meant to ensure that athletes are ‘covered, literally’, as they brace for the ultimate test of stamina. With their official gear secured and months of exhausting preparation behind them, Eswatini's runners and thousands of others from around the world are ready to face the mountain passes and write their names into the history books of this ultimate human race.
