Swazi MTN will soon appoint acting CEO

MBABANE – The future of Swazi MTN Chief executive Tebogo Mogapi remains uncertain after an announcement that the institution will be appointing an acting CEO.

A statement issued yesterday by Swazi MTN Board Chairman David Dlamini stated that the appointment would be made pending consultation with relevant stakeholders.

“Following various pronouncements in the media about the work of the Swazi MTN CEO, the Board of Directors of Swazi MTN wishes to notify its stakeholders that it will be appointing an acting CEO pending consultation between the relevant stakeholders.

“As the process develops appropriate announcements will be made. The board appreciates the cooperation and respect for the processes from all concerned,” the statement said.
This latest information comes after sister publication, the Swazi News, reported that incumbent CEO Mogapi was expected to stop work this Friday, the day that his special pass permit expires.

The publication reported that MTN had not filed an application requesting for an extension of Mogapi’s special pass with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration.
In November last year, Mogapi was granted a three-month permit by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration after his initial work permit expired and was not renewed.

Last month, South African President Jacob Zuma’s government sent the local government a letter instructing it to resolve the MTN CEO matter.
Home Affairs Minister Mgwagwa Gamedze, when contacted yesterday, said the matter was out of his jurisdiction as it fell under the Minister of Information Communication and Technology Nelisiwe Shongwe and Patrick Mamba, the Minister of Labour and Social Security.

Minister Shongwe said; “My information is that a press statement has been issued informing stakeholders that the board is now going to start the process of appointing the acting CEO.
The ministry as might be expected, cannot be directly involved in this process as this is the function of the board.
The ministry is however aware of  these processes and is of the view that they are appropriate under the circumstances.

In his last media briefing, Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini put it succinctly clear that Mogapi’s time as MTN CEO was up.
The PM said the post should be given to a local person as they believed that the country had qualified people who could take over the position.
The only local to have held the post of Swazi MTN CEO is Themba Khumalo who presently heads MTN Uganda after serving in the same position with MTN Rwanda.
