MBABANE- Government is looking at an option of having a car assembly plant to service its fleet and that of parastatals.

Information gathered from sources is that this is aimed at having one source that government could utilise when purc-hasing its fleet.

The matter has already been discussed at the country’s high levels of authority and some of the companies have been identified to help secure the assembly plant.
Though the matter is currently kept a ‘secret’ the Swazi News has it in authority that Mazda, Mahindra and Mitsu-bishi brands have been identified for the deal, which it is envisaged could save government millions of Emalangeni when buying vehicles from different dealers.

Government’s latest move is a ‘stolen’ concept from Zimbabwe’s Willowvale Mazda Motor Industries assembly plant, which distributes both passenger and commercial vehicles under government dire-ction.
According to Zimbabwe’s independent media The Herald report, His Majesty King Mswati III visited the car Assembly plant during his visit to that country a few weeks ago.

dealings

Locally, Mazda brands are supplied by Carson Auto while Mitsubishi fleet is supplied by Swazi Auto Truck in Matsapha whose mother plant is Mercedes-Benz and both companies apart from Mahindra have already had dealings with the local government.

It has also been gathered that deliberations on which company will eventually set up the assembly plant are ongoing.
When reached for comment on the matter Central Transport Ma-nager Polycarp Dlamini expressed shock on how the issue has reached this publication but eventually confirmed the latest developments but referred all questions to his superiors in the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

“I have been assigned to look into this issue by the Ministry and so I think they would be in the best position to comment on the matter,” he said.
