Widow arrested for stealing tractor
NHLANGANO-A 42-year-old widow of Holneck was arrested and charged for stealing a tractor on Sunday night.
Siphiwe Simelane is alleged to have on July 5, 2009 (Sunday) between 11pm and midnight stolen a Red Massey Ferguson 135 tractor.
The tractor was registered NEU 6983, valued at E25 000 and is alleged to belong to James Lukhele also of Holneck.
According to reliable sources, it is alleged that the widow (Simelane) drove the tractor at night from the Lukhele homestead to her homestead.
It is alleged that the tractor was parked next to a maize storage (inyango) when stolen.
Despite hearing the tractor’s engine when started the owner (Lukhele) is alleged to have not come out of the house, assuming it was armed robbery and would be shot at if he dared confront them.
Contrary to his earlier assumptions, Lukhele is alleged to have been shocked the next day when his own investigations led him to the Simelane homestead and found the tractor nicely parked behind a house.
It is alleged that he had followed the tractor’s tyre marks which led him to the Simelane homestead.
In that instance, it is alleged that the baffled Lukhele reported the matter to the Nhlangano police, and the widow was arrested.
However, the widow made her appearance before court in the company of her 21-year-old son, Mbongeni Simelane, who is allegeded to have assisted in the theft of the tractor.
It transpired before court that police were still looking for a third accomplice linked to the crime.
Magistrate Musa Nxumalo remanded them to custody.
