MBABANE – Eswatini’s Under-15s defeated the Maldives 3–0 before suffering a narrow 2–1 loss to Palestine, pushing them into the tournament’s final placement matches.
Facing the Maldives in the Tier E Round of 32 on Wednesday, the junior squad put on a masterclass in efficient finishing. Samkelo Tsabedze opened the scoring just three minutes into the match, followed swiftly by a goal from Mnotfo Simelane in the seventh minute. Junior Shabangu sealed the decisive 3–0 victory late in the game, booking Eswatini a spot in the Round of 16.
However, the celebratory mood was short-lived. Returning to the pitch later that afternoon, Eswatini squared off against a disciplined Palestine U-15 side. Despite a valiant effort in the 8-a-side developmental format, the young Sihlangu fell just short in a tight 2–1 defeat. Palestine advanced along the winners’ path, leaving Eswatini to recalibrate.
Crucially, the defeat does not signal the end of the road for the Eswatini squad. Under FIFA’s tournament model, which prioritises international exposure and youth development over immediate elimination, no teams are sent home early.
Eswatini now shift into the lower-tier classification path within the Tier E bracket. Over the coming days, they are guaranteed a series of placement matches against other eliminated Round of 16 teams to determine their exact final global standing.
Next up for Eswatini is a Tier E lower-bracket classification semi-final against The Gambia on Thursday, October 29, 2026, kicking off at 10:45am Eswatini time. This crucial fixture will begin sorting out the teams’ final global position within the 145th to 160th ranking zone, before the historic global festival officially concludes on November 1, 2026 at the Hovsan Competition Complex and Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan.
