MBABANE- 40 of the nation’s finest vocalists converged at The George Hotel yesterday for Standard Bank Choral Music Competition Solo eliminations.
By the end of the day, the field was narrowed to just 12, each having survived a grueling one-day format designed to streamline the road to the finals.
In a departure from previous years, organizers opted for a one-and-done approach. The solo eliminations were condensed into a single day of intense competition. This strategic shift ensures that the soloists’ journey concludes early, allowing the focus to turn entirely to the upcoming ensemble categories.
Crucially, this means the soloists will not have to compete during the Mixed Choirs Competition, which is scheduled to take place at Esibayeni Lodge on May 24.
The competition saw a perfectly balanced field, with talent distributed evenly across the four primary vocal ranges. The breakdown of competitors included 10 performers from Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass entries. Each category faced rigorous adjudication, as the 40 hopefuls aimed to prove their technical mastery and emotional depth.
The upcoming competition promises to be a grander spectacle, featuring the powerhouse mixed choirs including His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir, Manzini Choir , Pure Voices, Sweet Sounds, and many other ensembles both on the Standard and Large Category.
The Standard Bank Choral Music Competition remains the gold standard for local talent, and if Sunday’s solo marathon was any indication, the upcoming finals will be nothing short of historic.
