MBABANE-The creative energy inside the Eswatini Theatre Club is palpable as the October International Theatre Festival shifts into high gear.
Among the stellar lineup of industry leaders imparting wisdom to the country’s next generation of performers is renowned theatre practitioner Dr Sindi Disi, who is currently leading an intensive, theatre masterclass.
Dr Disi’s workshop has become a focal point for aspiring actors and actresses looking to hone their craft.
Taking a hands-on approach to production, Dr Disi challenged participants to step out of their comfort zones splitting the aspiring creatives into diverse settings such as a hospital ward environment and a construction site, school environment and other environments .He tasked them with weaving compelling dramatic scenarios from scratch.
According to Dr Disi, a truly immersive stage play relies on a careful synthesis of sensory elements. He instructed the classes to consciously integrate dynamic soundscapes, striking visual imagery and powerful monologues to elevate their storytelling beyond basic dialogue.
Beyond the creative conceptualization, the masterclass served as a rigorous lesson in professional discipline and commercial awareness. Dr Disi emphasized the realities of the performing arts industry, reminding participants that audiences pay hard-earned money for tickets and therefore deserve a polished, high-value production. He further drilled home the importance of unyielding focus, mastering complex dialogue structures and committing fully to the execution of any assigned character, regardless of how challenging the role might be.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the festival, Dr Disi shared his enthusiasm for the qinitiative and the remarkable potential he has witnessed on the floor.
“The festival is doing a phenomenal job by providing a vital platform for local talent to showcase what they are truly capable of, I have been genuinely amazed by the level of raw talent, hunger to learn and creative passion I have seen among the participants here.”
