MBABANE – Celebrated Mozambican football figure Matthews ‘Chaka Chaka’ Mandlazi is strongly tipped for a return to Eswatini.
This is according to mounting reports following a coaching upheaval at the ‘Sea Robbers’ of Moneni.
Mandlazi boasts a notable history in the kingdom, having previously managed former National First Division side Matsapha United, Malanti Chiefs and Manzini Wanderers.
His playing career was equally distinguished, featuring stints with Wanderers and Denver Sundowns.
Internationally, he played in countries including Qatar and Portugal, the homeland of legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
The speculation follows the swift resignation of former Sea Robbers Malawian tactician Meck Mwase, whose departure, along with that of his Assistant Coach Charles Manda, was accepted by the club’s employers at the end of last month. This was confirmed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Dlamini in a press briefing last Monday. Pirates were subsequently led by a Caretaker Coach Richard Ngcamphalala during their goalless draw with Malanti Chiefs two days ago.
During the briefing, Dlamini had promised plans to swiftly engage a new coach, but remained tight-lipped regarding the identities of possible contenders.
When contacted by this publication yesterday, Mandlazi was neither confirming nor denying the swirling reports.
“As you know, I am a professional coach, free, available and I cannot deny or confirm,” Mandlazi stated. “However, it is always a pleasure to hear such information because you are talking about a club with history that I do respect so much in the country.”
