MBABANE – King Charles III has praised Eswatini’s efforts to tackle environmental challenges and protect her natural heritage while reaffirming the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) close ties with the Kingdom.
The British monarch made the remarks in an Independence Day message addressed to His Majesty King Mswati III and the people of Eswatini, in which he also highlighted the importance of the Commonwealth amid global uncertainty.
King Charles said he reflected with ‘sincere appreciation’ on the enduring friendship and close partnership between the United Kingdom and Eswatini.
He said the relationship was rooted in mutual respect and common values and continued to be strengthened by ties between the two countries’ peoples and their shared commitment to the Commonwealth.
“Our relationship continues to flourish, strengthened by the ties between our peoples and our shared commitment to the Commonwealth,” King Charles said.
The monarch singled out Eswatini’s response to environmental challenges, saying he was encouraged by the country’s commitment to building resilience and protecting its natural heritage for future generations.
“I am encouraged by Eswatini’s commitment to building resilience in the face of environmental challenges and to safeguarding its natural heritage for future generations,” he said.
King Charles said such efforts demonstrated the determination and responsibility needed to secure a sustainable future.
The reference to environmental resilience comes as Eswatini continues to confront pressures associated with environmental sustainability and the protection of its natural resources.
King Charles also used the message to emphasise the importance of the Commonwealth, particularly at a time of international uncertainty.
He said the organisation’s diversity and the energy of its younger generations continued to inspire hope and progress.
“In a time of global uncertainty, the bonds that unite us are more important than ever,” he said.
King Charles said he looked forward to the opportunity for Commonwealth countries to come together at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year.
He said the meeting would provide an opportunity for member states to reaffirm their shared commitments and chart a course towards a prosperous future for their citizens.
The message placed the bilateral relationship between Eswatini and the UK within the wider Commonwealth partnership, with King Charles stressing the links between the two peoples.
He described the relationship as one based on mutual respect and common values, while expressing appreciation for its continued development.
King Charles’s message therefore combined three key themes, Eswatini’s environmental efforts, the continuing UK-Eswatini relationship and the role of the Commonwealth in addressing global challenges.
He opened his message by extending his and his wife’s congratulations to His Majesty King Mswati III and emaSwati on the country’s Independence Day.
“Your Majesty, my wife and I have great pleasure in sending to you and to the people of the Kingdom of Eswatini our warmest congratulations on the occasion of your Independence Day,” he said.
He concluded by wishing His Majesty King Mswati III and the people of Eswatini peace, prosperity and success in the year ahead.
“My wife and I extend our very best wishes to you and to all emaSwati for a peaceful, prosperous and successful year ahead,” King Charles said.
