MBABANE – Ezulwini United are using football to champion breast cancer awareness, urging early detection and support for those affected by the disease.
The club’s captain, Mpendulo Simelane, led the call during their MTN Premier League clash against reigning champions Nsingizini Hotspurs on Saturday, October 10, 2026, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“As footballers, we fight until the final whistle. This October, let’s also fight for awareness, early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer,” Simelane said.
He urged women to know their bodies and prioritise their breast health, while encouraging men to support the women in their lives by urging them to get screened.
The skipper also reminded supporters that breast cancer affects men as well, stressing that the disease is not exclusive to women.
Early detection plays a vital role in improving breast cancer outcomes, as identifying the disease at an early stage generally increases the chances of successful treatment.
“Let’s wear pink, spread awareness and stand together, because no one should fight cancer alone,” Simelane added.
Meanwhile, the club’s team doctor, Ncamy Kunene, who is also a nurse at Ekuphileni Clinic, said this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month theme is “Every story is unique, every journey matters.”
In a symbolic show of solidarity, Simelane and Nsingizini Hotspurs captain Sinenkhosi ‘China’ Dlamini lit candles before kick-off, highlighting the importance of unity in the fight against breast cancer.
The awareness initiative provided a powerful message beyond the pitch, as the two sides later played out a goalless draw in their Week Three MTN Premier League encounter.
