MANZINI – Thousands of Imbali yesterday descended on the Mbangweni Royal Residence in the Shiselweni Region, marking the beginning of the second leg of the annual Umhlanga (Reed Dance) Ceremony.
The young maidens began arriving at the royal residence from around 2pm, with buses ferrying them from various chiefdoms across the Shiselweni Region.
Their arrival marked the start of a three-day programme, following the first leg of the prestigious ceremony held at Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
The atmosphere at Mbangweni was characterised by singing, dancing and excitement, as Imbali entered the royal residence in their respective regiments.
Upon arrival, the maidens were assembled and given guidance on the expectations and conduct required throughout the ceremony.
They were reminded that discipline and respect remained central to the proceedings, with strict instructions issued to ensure that the Imbali remained within the designated areas during the ceremony.
The maidens were warned against being seen in town during the proceedings and were also discouraged from bathing in nearby rivers.
The instructions were aimed at ensuring that the maidens remained safe and focused on the activities of the ceremony.
The thousands of young girls arrived with considerable supplies for their stay, with buses transporting the Imbali while trucks were used to carry their luggage and bundles of reed.
A notable development this year was the provision of sanitary pads to the Imbali upon arrival at the registration point.
The initiative was facilitated by the National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA), in what was described as another effort aimed at supporting and empowering the girl child during the traditional ceremony.
The distribution of sanitary products added a practical element to the preparations, particularly as the Imbali would spend several days away from their homes while participating in the ceremony.
The Shiselweni Imbali will today be joined by regiments from Lobamba and Ngabezweni, as preparations intensify ahead of the main day of the ceremony.
The Imbali are expected to deliver the reed to Their Majesties today around noon.
The reed delivery will form part of the build-up to the main event tomorrow, when the maidens are expected to dance before Their Majesties in one of the kingdom’s most significant cultural ceremonies.
The first arrivals at Mbangweni continued throughout the afternoon and into the evening, with the movement and registration of Imbali continuing until as late as 11pm.
The large turnout once again demonstrated the scale of the annual ceremony, which brings together maidens from across the country while also attracting visitors and participants from beyond Eswatini.
For many of the young girls, the ceremony provides an opportunity to participate in one of the kingdom’s most important cultural traditions, while also allowing them to interact with other regiments from different parts of the country.
With the arrival of the additional regiments expected today, activity at the Mbangweni Royal Residence is expected to increase significantly as the maidens prepare for the main day of the ceremony.
The Shiselweni leg is, therefore, set to provide another major spectacle as the kingdom celebrates its culture and traditions under the guidance of Their Majesties.
