Amplifying Swati music through culture

In recent years, the music scene in Eswatini has seen a resurgence of traditional sounds blended seamlessly with contemporary influences.

Currently at the forefront of this movement is Sancheziey, a talented artist whose latest release, ‘Siyabonga Gogo’, has not only captured the attention of local audiences, but has also sparked a renewed appreciation for Swati cultural heritage.

His work exemplifies how music can serve as a powerful vessel for cultural expression, bridging generations and elevating Swati identity on both national and international stages.

Sancheziey’s ‘Siyabonga Gogo’ is more than just a song; it’s a cultural homage rooted in tradition. The song samples from a traditional Swati tune commonly sung during ceremonies in the kingdom. This musical foundation is a deliberate choice by Sanch-eziey, who aims to amplify Swati culture thro-ugh his artistry.

The artist said the traditional sound in his album is inspired by his own song and that this track has given him a sense of identity and a possible light in his musical journey that has spanned over eight years.

He mentioned that after the song’s release on March 30, it became apparent that the sound of ‘Siyabonga Gogo’ was guiding the direction of his subsequent work, shaping the sound for upcoming projects.

He explained that ‘Siyabonga Gogo’ carries layers of influences, a result of his desire to be diverse since he started in the music industry.

He shared that the song’s richness stems from his background, which includes participation in the African Harmony Choir, a Gospel group for Care Point children that introduced him to the music scene.

The vocalists from that choir contributed to the backing vocals in ‘Siyabonga Gogo’, although the choir no longer exists.

The artist said that his musical evolution also includes Christian rap, with many of his lyrics drawing from biblical quotes and beliefs, and the Hip Hop texture of Trap music, which influences the melodic flow of his verses. He said that the Trap element in his music boosts creativity and helps him express himself more freely.

Furthermore, Sancheziey highlighted that incorporating Afro-Pop into his sound ensures that his music remains rooted in Africanism, emphasising his cultural identity.

He said: “The traditional sound in the album is inspired by my own song ‘Siyabonga Gogo’. The song has given me identity, given me a possible light in the chase I’ve heard for like eight years.

After ‘Siyabonga Gogo’s take off on March 30, it became clear to me that the sound of this song is already directing the choice of sound for the next song or project.

The song ‘Siyabonga Gogo’ itself has got layers, which I can honestly say are a result of all the sounds I’ve tried to be diverse with since I began my journey in the music industry.

All those layers have contributed to the raw Swati sound that is now resonating in my latest album, ‘Salukazana’.”
