ESWACOS launches project to boost creativity

The Eswatini Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Society (ESWACOS) is proud to announce the commencement of a transformative project titled ‘Reinforcing Copyrights for Eswatini’s Cultural and Creative Industries.’

This landmark initiative is funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) of UNESCO, established under the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The project officially commences in August 2025 and will run through September 2026

The IFCD is a dedicated funding mechanism by UNESCO that supports developing countries in strengthening their cultural and creative sectors, promoting cultural diversity and fostering sustainable development.

The 2005 Convention is a key international treaty which Eswatini is a signatory to, it is aimed at safeguarding the richness and pluralism of cultural expressions worldwide.

ESWACOS’ project embodies the spirit of this convention by reinforcing copyright governance, empowering creators and promoting the economic and cultural value of creative works in Eswatini.

ESWACOS’ Executive Director, Mmeli Hlanze, shared that they are proud to launch this transformative initiative aimed at empowering Eswatini’s creators and cultural industries through enhanced copyright knowledge and strategic frameworks.

“Copyright is the backbone of a thriving creative economy. It protects our artists and ensures they receive the recognition and economic benefits they deserve.

“By bridging critical knowledge and strategy gaps, this project will open new pathways for sustainable careers particularly for our youth, who are the future of Eswatini’s vibrant cultural heritage.

 “We are grateful to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for selecting our project from the thousands that were submitted,” he said

The project addresses urgent gaps in copyright knowledge and strategic management within Eswatini’s dynamic creative sector.
