UTAH – Police are today hunting for a sniper in black seen scrambling off a rooftop shortly after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot in the neck.

Footage of the political assassination at Utah Valley University shows a figure lying flat on their stomach on top of a building directly across from where the 31-year-old conservative activist fell. The conservative commentator, a married father of two, was struck in the jugular by a single bullet, while addressing the crowd of 3 000 people about mass shootings yesterday afternoon.

Moments before the shot, a figure in dark clothing is seen motionless on the roof of the Losee Centre – roughly 150 to 200 yards from Kirk, just before he was hit. As the camera pans across the crowd, the assassin is seen standing up and running across the rooftop and away, presumably joining the crowds of panicked people who fled the square.

Kirk’s wife Erika Frantzve and their three-year-old daughter and 16-month-old son were in the square watching him speak when he died, according to the BBC, but they were uninjured. Two men were arrested at the scene but quickly released, with officers now desperately trying to find the marksman, who successfully fled the scene.

FBI agents are now working with the local police to track down the killer, with Utah governor Spencer Cox vowing to catch the murderer and suggesting the shooter will face the death penalty. “To whoever did this: We will find you. We will try you and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law,” he said.

Police hunting for the suspect arrested two men at the scene- including one described as a ‘person of interest’ – but both have been released without charge.

Witnesses claim there were no security measures in place and tickets were not checked. University police said only six officers were at the campus event that hosted about 3 000 people.

President Trump called Kirk ‘a martyr for truth and freedom’. “Charlie was the best of America and the monster who was attacking him was attacking our whole country,” he said, before ordering flags on US government buildings to be lowered to half-staff, including three at the White House.

On another dark day for the US, it was revealed:

  • Police arrested two men but haven’t found the shooter;
  • Charlie Kirk was warned against speaking at college events for safety reasons;
  • Security at the rally was non-existent, with no bag searches and six campus police officers managing a crowd of 3 000;
  • Kirk was speaking about gun violence when he was shot;
  • Left-wing fanatics have celebrated influencer Charlie Kirk’s murder – with some comparing him to Adolf Hitler and even suggesting he ‘deserved’ his fate;
  • His wife and children were present but uninjured.

Republicans and Democrats have condemned yet another act of political violence in America.
